Scenario design by Stuart Voss
4RAR Ops (Ambush)
BACKGROUND:
The failure of the VIP rescue mission (assumed that was the result of SASR mission 1) has meant that desperate measures need to be undertaken. An ambush must be set-up to recapture the Australian dignitary (or failing that kill him before he talks!). This is the last action special forces can undertake before the target is moved to a military prison deep behind enemy lines. The SASR elements of the previous mission unfortunately met with a larger force of Indonesian advance elements and were either killed or taken as prisoners. This has not been substantiated at this point in time. A new force has been scrambled from the Queensland based 4RAR and Army reserve soldiers who have just completed a Special Forces Basic course at the same Barracks. As these soldiers are being scrambled prematurely, they are not as well armed as the previous team.

Once again the thermal imaging satellites have pointed us to the main body of the Indonesian forces, which is believed to be where the Australian dignitary is. From these sat-photos, we can triangulate a possible ambush position that would allow us to re-capture the VIP and try and salvage some face in the eyes of the Indonesians, who at this point in time are no doubt smirking wildly to themselves. The cats that ate the cream. Not for long.

MISSION
The mission is simple. To advance through hostile territory to set up a linear ambush position to catch the Indonesian forces in a cross-fire. This will hopefully be sufficient enough to either wipe them out completely or to at least make them cut off from their original forces. This will allow the body of your forces to advance and recapture the VIP.

4RAR
With the current crisis due to lack of ready troopers, weapons pools looks like:

Rank 4RAR Weapon Lasertag Weapon
Sergeant  FA-88 Aussteyr  50mm Pro
Corporal  FA-88 Aussteyr 50mm Pro
Private  FA-88 Aussteyr  50mm Pro
Private  FA-88 Aussteyr 50mm Pro
Private  MAG-58 Section Assault Morita configured as LMG (5)
Private  Parker Hale Sniper Morita Sniper
Private  FN-FAL Assault Rifle 25mm Pro

Usually an ambush is created by a smaller party of troops in a strategically advantageous position. (i.e. raised, linear, staggered)

No replacements are available.

ENEMY
The enemy in this mission is definitely the Indonesians. The conditions of winning for the Indonesians is obviously to escape the ambush with minimal casualties, although extracting the VIP is their primary objective. The Indonesians are numerically superior compared to the 4RAR troops comprising of 13 soldiers plus the VIP.  A significant number of the unit are made up of lightly armed scouts.

Rank Enemy Weapon Lasertag Weapon
Sergeant  FN-FAL 7.62mm SMG
Private  AK47 Assault Rifle 50mm Pro

Due to wounds incurred in mission 1, the Privates and Sergeant have 2 hit points left. Scouts get 3 hit points. The VIP still only has 1 hit point and must follow instructions of captors unless unguarded.

BRIEFING: 4RAR commandos

Your task is to move into a tactical ambush position in order to regain possession of the VIP (Australian dignitary) who has been captured by the Indonesian advance forces. You must be able to eliminate all of the Indonesian forces in order to rescue the VIP. Be Aware though, the VIP is injured and friendly fire, isn’t.

BRIEFING: INDONESIANS
You are to take the VIP that you captured fro the downed RAAF Falcon900 VIP transport aircraft to your new advance invasion staging area. There s/he will be interrogated and held for exchange at a later date. You are currently 5 klicks from your objective. However, you receive a radio transmission from the forward staging area that warns of possible Australian forces in the area. Early warning radar systems picked up an UH-1B Iroquois helicopter. It is believed that anywhere from 3-12 Australians may be in your vicinity. Be careful.

OBJECTIVES: 4RAR

  1. Primary Obj. is to find a suitable ambush area and lay in wait for the Indonesian forces. It is imperative that you identify the VIP before you attack, as there may be advance elements passing through your ambush area.
  2. Secondary Obj. is to secure the VIP and move to an extraction point.
  3. Secondary Obj. is to eliminate all Indonesian forces.

FAILURE VARIABLES: 4RAR

  1. If the VIP is still alive and in captivity.
  2. If the entire 4RAR troops die.

If the Indonesian forces escape with the VIP.

Points:
Rescue the VIP and keep VIP alive until mission end 300 points
The VIP dies 100 points
Each 4RAR Soldier that survives 10 points

OBJECTIVES: INDONESIANS

  1. Primary Obj. is to find your forward staging area and deliver the VIP to your commanding officer
  2. Secondary Obj. it to kill any Australian forces in the area, as they pose a direct threat to the integrity of your forward staging area.

FAILURE VARIABLES: INDONESIANS

  1. If the VIP is killed
  2. If the Indonesian forces have not reached their forward staging area by the end of the allotted time.
  3. If at the end of game time, the Australian forces have not been removed from the field. They are assumed to have spotted the forward staging area and are reporting to a firebase or airbase.

POINTS
If VIP is alive and moved within 15 metres to the CO location, then 200 points
If all Australians are killed, then a bonus 100 points
Each Indonesian Soldier that survives, add 5 points.

GAME TIME: 15 mins
START POINTS: for the 4RAR, it can be assumed that they will start fairly close to the ambush point, however, they have to find a suitable ambush point on their own. If the ambush point is not up to scratch, they will be compromised before they can liberate the VIP.

The Indonesians must start on the north western trail about 40 metres west of the barrels. Their commanding officer is assumed to be located near the old bow club building
