Mission design by Peter Lander
Tet Offensive

Historical Background
One of the primary and most symbolic targets of the Communists’ ‘General Offensive – General Uprising’ during the Tet holiday was the ancient royal city of Hué. A powerful NVA and VC force assaulted the city from three directions early on 31 January during the traditional Tet ceasefire. The Communists soon overran the city’s surprised ARVN defenders and raised the Vietcong flag above the Citadel, a massive old fortress at the center of the city. It took three battalions of U.S. Marines, dispatched from their base at Phu Bai to the south, almost one month to recapture the city, which by that time was a pile of rubble and rotting corpses.
What followed in that next month for the Marines and their enemy was some of the hardest and bloodiest fighting of the entire war. It took time for the Americans to realize the strength of the VC forces in Hué, and to understand their willingness to fight so hard to defend an urban objective. Several times the Marine counterattack stalled because of unexpectedly fierce opposition as well as poor intelligence and miscommunication. However, raw determination and superior firepower carried the Marines to victory. On 24 February, the VC flag was torn down and the government’s flag was raised above the Citadel once again.

Mission Length: up to 90 minutes.

Pro USA Forces Briefing

The players start the mission as AVRN defenders. They are located in the urban area and are under immediate and effective assault by VC and NVA forces. A flag must be placed in the urban areas, centrally and prominently displayed.

Due to surprise, poor training, poor logistics and poor morale, the AVRN are not well equipped to defend the city from the Communists. The AVRN therefore have only 3 hit points and no M16's. Up to 2 x M60;s allowed, M14's (Pulse Rifles or equivalent combat rifles on semi auto only) and Thompson SMG's (Spitfires).

There are no replacements available to the AVRN.

US Marines deploy and receive replacements available from the south east corner. 30 minutes after the AVRN first make contact with the VC or NVA, US Marines are available. For every pro US player, there is 1.5 Marines replacements rounded up, available. The Marines have M16's or M60's. The leader can also call in one air strike that will destroy one building block and kill all defenders in it or within 5 metres during the mission. An air strike takes 5 minutes to arrive from the time it is called in and must be called in at the entry point. Marines have 5 hit points.

The Pro US get a major win, if the original flag hoisted is never torn down by the Communists.
The Pro US a draw victory condition, if they restore the flag or a substitute to the same position by the end of the mission.

Communist Forces Briefing

The communist players start and receive replacements from the North East corner of the battlefield outside the urban areas.

The first wave of attacks is led by the NVA forces. NVA have 4 hit points. All replacements are VC and have 3 hit points. There are 2 replacements available for each communist player. Any weapons can be used, that have not been allocated to the US Forces, except no auto pistols are allowed and all units must be on full volume modern sound effects.

The Communists get a major win, if the original flag hoisted is torn down by the Communists and is replaced by the communist flag at the end of 90 minutes..
The Communists get draw victory condition if they at some point tear down the South Vietnamese government flag and replace it with the communist flag.

Clearly only currently alive players can do anything with the flags.
