MISSION LENGTH: 20 minutes
Background
In
the year 1915, Australian and New Zealand forces landed on an
unknown shoreline, with orders to take the ground and hold it.
They landed not knowing that the campaign they were about
to commence would last several months, and would earn the soldiers
a place in military history as some of the bravest soldiers in the
world!
By the end of the conflict, despite the fact that it was a
failure for them, everyone would know the name ANZAC.
The place, which would be known to following generations of
Australians forevermore, was Gallipoli.
The
British high command attempted to capture the strategic
Dardanelle’s, in an effort to cut off the Turks from the
Mediterranean.
They decided that light infantry, unsupported by artillery,
would be able to take the peninsula.
However, they failed to take into account the fact that the
entire peninsula was a series of steep hills facing the beaches,
from which a dug in division could hold off an army with minimal
effort.
In the ensuing slaughter, the ANZAC forces pushed back the
Turks in a number of positions, and were able to hold them,
despite coming under fire from higher ground, and in the process,
established a reputation for bravery, and excellence under fire,
unmatched by any force before or since!
Now, it’s your turn…
