Third Force Recon Battalion vs NVA
The third force recon company is under the command of Major Alex
Lee USMC. In order to prevent surprise attacks on US forces as they
are pulling out of Vietnam, third force recon company has to perform
special operations in the Ashau valley. The Ashau valley is
dominated by the NVA (North Vietnamese Army). Your missions include
defend the radio relay station, bomb assessment often under fire and
air crew rescue. The time is January 1970.
Since the only way into the valley is by helicopter (UH-1H) and
because of the anti-aircraft risk often only 1 or 2 helicopters can
make an insertion or extraction.
A standard squad for force reconnaissance consists of
7 people
because that is the lift capacity of one UH-1H
US Marines
- 1 x Corporal - leads squad
of 7 marines M16A1 (Combat
Rifle)
- 4 x Marines with M16s - Squad
Automatic Weapons (SMG)
- 1 x Specialist Marine with M60
(Morita configured as a LMG)
- 1 x Marine with a M14 (Combat
Rifle)
Marines Hit Points: 4

NVA equipment allocation is a mixed bag.

One squad of NVA and one squad of VC with 7 soldiers per squad
start at the bottom boundary. 12 replacements are available to the
NVA and VC combined from the bottom boundary.

Missions
Defend Relay Station
Mission Length:
20
minutes
The 3rd Force Marines radio relay station has been
found by the NVA and has come under immediate assault. Rescue
helicopter gunships are on their way according to the last
broadcast, but the marines have to survive until then. Your new
Lieutenant has panicked and gone running off into the Jungle. Now
your squad has to hold out against sustained enemy assault until
rescue comes. Major Alex Lee in person is coming to your rescue with
every recon marine available.
Seven Marines start mission in at the
top boundary of the battlefield so the NVA have to fight upwards
(the relay station was posited on top of a hill). Marines
start with 4 hit points. Up to 4 replacements are available
immediately with only 3 hit points and they start right in your
base (considered to be patched up wounded marines). However
if the US base is under NVA control, no replacements are available. If the Relay
Station is still in US hands after 15 minutes, the US side gains 12
replacements of 5 hit points each (representing Major Lee's
arrival).
The NVA & VC start at the bottom
of the battlefield initially but have 12 replacements in the DZ
(bottom entry). NVA have 2 hit points and VC have
3 hit points. NVA & VC should
work together.
VICTORY POINTS:
- Marines get 10 points every surviving marine within 10 metres of
the relay station at the end of 20 minutes. (Considered to be
rescued by the Major after 20 minutes)
- Marines get another 50 points if all NVA are killed.
- NVA get 50 points if they capture the relay station and get 5
points for each surviving NVA
- An unused replacement counts as a survivor (does not count if
NVA control relay station)
Bomb Assessment B52 – Arc Light
Mission Length:
30 minutes
B52 missions are flown from the Anderson airbase in Guam. Flying
a Arc Light were very expensive, so the military planners require
the Recon marines to drop into the bomb site after the mission to
report on what damage is done. The bad news is that because the idea
of the mission is to drop bombs on the NVA, its quite likely there
is NVA in the area.
Its now January 22nd, 1970 and your have landed in a
clearing made by the bombing. There is no immediate sign of danger,
so your squad moves out. To complete the mission you have to move
all the way around the outskirts of the battlefield and collect the
4 markers and then return to the DZ within 20 minutes.
The good news is that 2nd chopper load of Marines is
on standby to provide assistance if you encounter any danger. This
means that 5 minutes from enemy contact, 7 additional replacements
are available.
As is quite common some NVA have moved back into the area to see
what can be retrieved from the bomb site. 1 squad NVA and 1 squad of
Viet Cong can start anywhere within 20 metres of the battlefield
boundary. Replacements can be gained from the battlefield entry
point (bottom boundary). The NVA can have
up to 4 replacements and the Viet Cong can also have 4 replacements.
The mission must be completed by the Marines in 30 minutes.
VICTORY POINTS:
- Marines get 20 points for each marker they get back to the DZ
- Marines get 10 points for each
surviving Marine or unused replacement
- Vietnamese get 20 points for each marker the Marines fail to get
back to their DZ
- Vietnamese get 5 points for each surviving NVA
- Vietnamese get 3 points for each surviving Viet Cong
